Research Officer/Senior Research Officer - Mycobacterial Research
CENTENARY INSTITUTE is a centre of excellence in medical research affiliated with the Royal PrinceAlfredHospital and the University of Sydney located at Camperdown.
CENTENARY specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases ranging from cancer, diabetes and allergy, to genetic heart disease and tuberculosis. Our strategy is to undertake ‘cutting edge’ research into the biology of normal and diseased cells, with the goal of improving our understanding of what causes disease and to translate these discoveries into clinical practice through development of new vaccines, better diagnostic tests and innovative forms of treatment.
Applications are invited from motivated individuals who wish to contribute to two exciting research programmes within the laboratory:
Position 1 RO/SRO: You will work on a five year Wellcome-funded project headed by Professor Warwick Britton and Dr Bernadette Saunders, which involves the screening and investigating ENU-induced genetic mutations that affect susceptibility to experimental tuberculosis. This is part of an international Infection and Immunity Genetic Consortium with Prof C Goodnow at JCSMR and colleagues in Oxford and Paris. The project aims to identify and understand the mechanism of action of these genes and how they influence immunity to tuberculosis both in mice and humans.
Position 2 RO/SRO:You will work as part of an established NHMRC-funded team headed by Professor Warwick Britton, Dr Jamie Triccas and Dr Nick West, and undertake basic and translational research into developing more effective vaccines against tuberculosis. You will use TcR transgenic T cell mice recognising mycobacterial and model antigens to investigate CD4 and CD8 T cell responses to novel protein, recombinant viral vaccines and BCG vaccines and how to increase these protective responses using immuno-regulatory cytokines.
Your main role in either of these projects will be to undertake research experiments with a component of laboratory support, including supervision of junior staff and students while participating in the activities of the Institute.
The successful applicants will have:
- PhD in immunology or microbiology, preferably with experience in a variety of immunological techniques, particularly flow cytometry, handling of infectious agents and small animal experimentation,
- demonstrated publication record,
- ability to write journal articles, grant applications and keep meticulous notes,
- strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with an ability to liaise with a diverse range of people,
- a demonstrated commitment to Occupational Health and Safety,
- a strong team focus, and
- a demonstrated ability to supervise junior staff and students.
CENTENARY offers attractive superannuation and salary packaging to staff and the salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
Applications should be emailed to
Applications MUST include:
- a covering letter,
- a detailed curriculum vitae (CV), and
