Exclusive chance to view cutting-edge science through the eyes of a researcher

Ever wondered what it’s like to work on a cure for cancer? The public are invited to join Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales at the Centenary Institute in Camperdown for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at its cutting-edge research.

The Centenary Institute will open its labs on Tuesday 17 August from 5.30pm to 7pm, as part of National Science Week. The event will give visitors a chance to go on an exciting tour to see working labs through the eyes of a medical researcher.

Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales said: “As patron of the Centenary Institute, I’m looking forward to getting a closer inspection of the excellent research the team are conducting to improve and save lives.”

Centenary Institute scientists will also reveal how local research efforts could transform the field of medical research and save millions of lives worldwide.

·        Dr Nick West will discuss his pursuit of the first new treatment for tuberculosis (TB) in 50 years. TB is a disease that kills more than 2 million people worldwide each year.

·        Dr Nikolas Haas will highlight his work on melanoma. One of the fastest growing cancers in Australia with more than 5,500 new cases diagnosed each year.

·        Dr Jeff Holst will highlight key findings from his research into prostate cancer. The most common cancer in Australian men with almost 3,300 deaths each year.

Centenary Institute Executive Director Professor Mathew Vadas said: “This event would be of great interest to anyone who would like a first-hand view of research into cancer, cardiovascular disease and infectious diseases.”
