About this Speaker and talk:
Dr. Piccio obtained an M.D. and a Ph.D. degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Milan in Italy.  She completed a neurology residency program at the University of Milan. In 2005, she was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) during which she worked under the mentorship of Dr. Anne H Cross at Washington University in St Louis. In 2008 Dr. Piccio started to be on faculty in the Department of Neurology at Washington University and became Associate Professor in 2016. In February 2019, she joined the University of Sydney as an Associate Professor at the Brain and Mind Centre. During her career Dr. Piccio was the recipient of several awards including the Harry Weaver Neuroscience Award from the National MS Society, the Dana Neuroscience Scholar award from the Dana Foundation and the Whitaker prize from the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers. Her research integrates clinical and research aspects related to multiple sclerosis (MS) and in general neuroinflammation in central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Specific research directions of her laboratory are: (i) the study of the complex interplay between nutrition, metabolism and immune inflammatory responses in MS and other neurological diseases; (ii) the study of microglial biology and the innate immune receptor TREM2 (expressed by microglia) in the context of CNS neurodegeneration, demyelination and remyelination; and (iii) the identification of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or blood biomarkers to provide information on MS disease prognosis and guide treatment choices. A common theme of her research is to quickly take laboratory-based research findings into the clinical setting.
