Breaking through the barriers: the unspoken barriers for women in medical research

To mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Centenary Institute in collaboration with King & Wood Mallesons invite you to join us for ‘Breaking through: the unspoken barriers for women in medical research’.

Bringing together leaders in STEM from Government, medical research, health and university sectors to participate in a meaningful panel discussion to be facilitated by Sophie Scott OAM, award-winning medical TV journalist, international speaker and educator, around how the medical research sector can be a leader in gender and diversity balance.

The breakfast event will highlight the importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the scientific community, tackle the challenges for women in medical research and begin conversations to identify pathways to resolve these issues.

  • Professor Marc Pellegrini

    Executive Director,
    Centenary Institute

    Professor Marc Pellegrini is an infectious diseases physician, host-pathogen molecular biologist, and Executive Director at the Centenary Institute. An internationally renowned research scientist, Professor Pellegrini has over 20 years of experience working on chronic infections that include HIV, hepatitis B and tuberculosis. He was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2018.

    Partner,
    King & Wood Mallesons

    Angela Weber is a Partner in KWM’s Employee Relations & Safety team.  Her practice spans the full range of employment law, industrial relations and safety work. Angela works with a diverse range of clients on advisory, transactional and litigation matters, with particular expertise in the financial services sector.
  • Dr Kim Sutherland

    Executive Director,
    Office for Health and Medical Research

    Kim is the Executive Director of the Office for Health and Medical Research (OHMR) which sits within the Clinical Innovation and Research Division at the NSW Ministry of Health. Prior to her appointment to OHMR, Kim held Director roles at the NSW Health Agency for Clinical Innovation and the Bureau of Health Information. Kim is a health services researcher with experience in performance measurement and reporting, evaluation and assessment of quality, and change management in healthcare organisations. In 2022, Kim received the Public Service Medal for outstanding public service to NSW Health.
  • Professor Nancy Baxter

    Interim Executive Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health,
    University of Sydney

    Professor Baxter is currently Interim Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. She is a clinical epidemiologist, colorectal surgeon and health services researcher. Positions held before joining the University of Sydney include Head of the Melbourne School of Population and Global health at University of Melbourne and Associate Dean, Academic Affairs at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

  • Dr Melina Georgousakis

    Founder and Director,
    Franklin Women

    Dr Georgousakis is a research scientist, a social entrepreneur and champion for an inclusive health and medical research sector. She is the founder of Franklin Women, a social enterprise with a mission to create a science sector where women thrive and is currently leading the organisation as its director.
  • Clinical Professor Devanshi Seth

    Chair Inclusion and Gender Equity Program and Head of the Seth Laboratory,
    Centenary Institute

    Clinical Professor Seth is an internationally recognised expert pioneering the genetics of liver diseases. She has demonstrated strong leadership and innovative approaches in clinical research transforming the alcoholic liver disease field. She is the founding leader of a multinational GenomALC Consortium at the forefront of genetic research in this field. She is a passionately committed advocate and practitioner of diversity and inclusion.

  • Professor Jean Yang

    Director of Sydney Precision Data Science Centre,
    University of Sydney

    Professor Yang is a leader in statistical bioinformatics who works in cutting-edge biomedical research. She is currently the Director of Sydney Precision Data Science Centre. Her work has significantly advanced the integration of multi-layered biological data by eliminating extraneous variability and taking into account heterogeneity.
