Centenary Institute pays tribute to a great Australian

We have lost a faithful and loyal servant for science and for all of us here at the Centenary. Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC, OBE died on Sunday evening leaving a devoted family and numerous friends mourning his loss, including the Patron of this Institute, his wife, Dame Marie Bashir AD, CVO. The Institute was extremely fortunate to have the continued support and patronage of such a well-respected and much loved member of Australia’s community, and someone who was so passionate about the health sector.
He was a truly remarkable gentleman who passionately believed in a healthy and prosperous community, applying his care and inspirational manner to a number community initiatives; he served as Lord Mayor of Sydney from 1973 to 1975, Chairman of SBS, Chairman of TAFE and the Migrant Employment and Qualification Board, and Chairman of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust and, of course, was captain of the Australian Rugby Team, the Wallabies.
He was the epitome of a great Australian and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family at this difficult time.
