Progress and challenges in eye disease at Science for Sight

Professor Stephanie Watson OAM, leading eye surgeon and ophthalmologist at the University of Sydney, opened the event with an overview of the challenges and emerging opportunities in eye health research. She was followed by Associate Professor Guy Lyons from the Centenary Institute’s Centre for Cancer Innovations, who spoke on current medical research and developments in the highlighted eye disease areas.
A panel discussion followed, led by Professor Watson, featuring the Centenary Institute’s Dr Mojdeh Abbasi, alongside community members Melissa Dever and Kiyara Weeratunga. Dr Abbasi outlined her research into corneal disease, including regenerative therapies such as stem cell-infused contact lenses and spoke about the future potential of medical science in this field.
Melissa Dever shared her experience of living with keratoconus, her decline in vision and undergoing several corneal procedures, while Kiyara Weeratunga spoke about her challenging journey with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a chronic condition that causes severe dry eye and inflammation.
The event offered valuable insights into both the progress being made in medical research and the day-to-day realities of living with serious eye conditions. By bringing together researchers and patients, Science for Sight, underscored the importance of continued innovation to improve treatment options and outcomes.
