Dr Yagiz Aksoy is a clinician-researcher and Head of the Aksoy Laboratory at Centenary Institute, where he leads translational clinical AI research. He studies what happens when medical AI leaves the research paper and meets clinical care. His question is how a promising algorithm becomes a trustworthy clinical tool and what evidence should be required before it does. Combining medical practice, machine-learning development and six years in NSW Health policy, he brings the clinic, the code and the health system into one research programme. The Aksoy Laboratory develops explainable prediction and decision-support systems across oncology, dermatology and ophthalmology; tests whether they generalise across populations and settings; and investigates how they should fit workflows, communicate uncertainty, be monitored and governed.
His translational work is supported by the Australian Economic Accelerator programme to commercialise PanaceAI, a multi-cancer clinical decision-support platform, and he is a Chief Investigator on REP-AI, an NHMRC Partnership programme developing national ethics and governance frameworks for clinical AI in Australia. He holds an MD (University of Sydney) and a PhD (Macquarie University), spent six years in NSW Health policy, and remains in active clinical practice. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Daffodil Centre, contributing to Australia’s national skin cancer screening Roadmap, and, with the Centre for Vision Research at Westmead, co-leads Australia’s Global RETFound node.
