CeNTM encompasses Centenary’s biomedical research on Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) providing a network for capacity and expertise sharing. We have a specific focus on Mycobacterium abscessus, as this is an emerging NTM species of significance due to high level antibiotic resistance and low cure rates in at risk populations such as those with underlying genetic and structural abnormalities.
Our research teams have expertise spanning bacteriology, in vitro human cellular infection models, and mouse and zebrafish infection models which we use to investigate the pathogenesis of NTM infections and discover new treatments for infection.
Our laboratory space is fitted for bacterial culture and in vitro infection assays to test novel antimicrobial compounds and host-directed therapies against NTM species. Furthermore, we are well equipped to explore bacterial virulence factors and cellular host-pathogen interactions underpinning NTM disease pathogenesis. We have dedicated infection and imaging suites for performing and analysing medium throughput zebrafish embryo infections and have pioneered the use of adult zebrafish as a model of persistent M. abscessus infection.
As Australia’s largest concentration of NTM researchers, we can provide antimicrobial testing capacity across our range of in vitro and in vivo platforms for experimental molecules as a collaboration.
