Counting cells like clockwork

A group of Centenary supporters has generously donated $6,000 to the Institute’s Molecular Cardiology Program, allowing them to buy a new cell counter and continue further research into inherited heart disease.
Representatives of the Order of the Eastern Star Home Fund and the Wollongong Chapter were given a tour of the laboratory at Centenary on Thursday 9th August, before they presented Head of the Molecular Cardiology Program, Professor Chris Semsarian, with two cheques.
The donation by the OES Home Fund has been used to invest in an automated cell counter. Previously, scientists cultivating cells had to count them manually by using a hand clicker. This new instrument performs the task automatically, ensuring results are precise. While members of the OES Wollongong Chapter presented a cheque for $1,500 towards further research.
The Centenary Institute would like to thank the Order of the Eastern Star for their incredibly generous financial support, and for ensuring Centenary’s scientists can continue their critical life-saving research.
