When Art Meets Science – People’s Choice and Staff Pick winners

Date time 2 September, 2026
Guanshu Zhao and Dr Bobby Boumelhem
The winners of the People’s Choice and Staff Pick categories in the Centenary Institute’s ‘When Art Meets Science’ Prize have been announced, celebrating two striking scientific images that reveal the hidden detail and complexity of medical research.

The annual Prize showcases the fascinating world of medical research through captivating scientific images captured by Centenary Institute researchers in the course of their work.

The People’s Choice category was open to the wider community, giving members of the public the opportunity to select their favourite image. The Staff Pick was chosen by Centenary Institute staff.

Dr Bobby Boumelhem was awarded the People’s Choice prize for Constellations of a Dying Liver. He describes his image as at first glance, resembling a cosmic storm. A closer look reveals a microscopic view of liver cancer in a mouse model, transformed through scientific imaging into a vivid scene of colour and structure. By visualising tissue and tumour characteristics, researchers gain new clues into how liver cancer forms and how it might one day be stopped.

The Staff Pick prize was awarded to Guanshu Zhao for The Flutter of Breath. She notes that her image shows a section of lung tissue shaped like a butterfly, with two airways forming its symmetrical ‘wings’. The sample has been stained, a technique that highlights the tissue’s structural framework. The microscopic view of the lung shows the hidden architecture of respiration, where every breath depends on precisely arranged microscopic structures working in harmony to keep life in motion. Such lung imagery is used to better understand chronic respiratory disease and to ultimately provide improved outcomes for patients.

The two category winners join the three judged winners announced at a special ‘When Art Meets Science’ exhibition held in July.

Thank you to everyone who participated and a huge congratulations to all of our winners!
