Justin Clancy MP visits Centenary Institute

Hosted by Centenary’s Executive Director Professor Marc Pellegrini, Mr Clancy met with researchers working across a range of critical health areas, including sudden cardiac death, cancer and chronic disease.

Associate Professor Richard Bagnall and Dr Seakcheng Lim provided an overview of their research into sudden cardiac death in young people, highlighting the important role of clinical care and genetic testing in helping provide answers for affected families and improving prevention strategies.

Dr Lise Hunault showcased a cutting-edge technology platform that enables researchers to rapidly design and improve proteins for use in new treatments. The work has potential applications across a range of diseases, including type 1 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Dr Jess Tiffen also shared insights into her melanoma research, including efforts to harness the body’s immune system to better detect and treat skin cancer.

Professor Pellegrini said the visit was an important opportunity to demonstrate the impact of medical research and the value of continued investment in science and innovation.

“We were pleased to welcome Mr Clancy to the Centenary Institute and share the breadth of research taking place across our laboratories,” said Professor Pellegrini.

“Our researchers are working to better understand disease and develop new treatments that can improve and save lives. Visits such as this help highlight the importance of supporting medical research and its long-term benefits for patients, families and the broader community.”

The visit concluded with an informal discussion over morning tea, providing an opportunity to further discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the medical research sector.
