ABC radio interviews Professor Geoff McCaughan

The interview follows the release of the Lancet Commission’s report on liver cancer, which outlines the actions needed to reduce the disease’s impact worldwide.
According to the report, liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. New cases are projected to rise globally from 870,000 in 2022 to over 1.5 million by 2050.
Professor McCaughan spoke about the Commission’s report and recommendations to help prevent liver cancer. This included wider hepatitis B vaccination (the virus is a leading cause of liver cancer), the need for healthier lifestyle choices, and improved screening and early detection of cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) which can lead to cancer.
